5th GRADE
TEXTBOOK: Realidades 1, Chapters 1 through 3
Classes: 3 times per week (50 minute classes)
Homework: Once/week
We begin with reviewing basics (greetings, telling time, classroom items) then begin verb conjugation and writing paragraphs. In addition to weekly homework, each quarter the students will have two vocabulary quizzes and one or two grammar quizzes and one Chapter Test. there are two projectds during the year.
6th GRADE
TEXTBOOK: Realidades, Chapters 3 through 6
Classes: 3 times per week (50 minute classes)
Homework: Once/week
We continue with verb conjugation and writing paragraphs, however, there students are encouraged to speak the language more through skits writing and acting, songs and group work. Each chapter will include about two vocabulary quizzes and two grammar quizzes before the Chapter test. The sixth graders will have one project during the year.
7th GRADE
TEXTBOOK: Descubre 1 (Chapters 1-4)
Classes: 4 times per week (50 minutes each)
Homework: Once/week
Descubre 1 is a high school levels textbook. The 7th grade covers the first four chapters of the book which is Freshman year high school Spanish. Because this class starts at the beginning of Spanish (greetings, numbers, etc), the students are able to reinforce the basics. However, they are now learning a much larger vocabulary and begin incorporating spoken Spanish. Each week the students will usually have one class devoted to either current events and/or "Conversation Day" in which part of the class is only in Spanish.
8th GRADE
TEXTBOOK: Descubre 1 (Chapters 4-7)
Classes: 4 times per week (50 minutes each)
Homework: only once per week usually
The 8th grade always begins by re-doing Chapter 4 because it is a crucial chapter in terms of learning grammar aspects that become important as Spanish becomes more complicated. Then they move on to using direct and objects ; present progressive and the Past Preterite tense and some of the most important irregular verb conjugations of that tense. In addition to a weekly current event/conversation day, the 8th grade holds a Spanish fiesta . Preparing for that fiesta requires learning poetry from the Golden Age of Literature, learning the lyrics and singing the favorite Latin pop songs and cooking their favorite Latin dishes.
